Veneers Before And After

Veneers before and after is a procedure that involves changing the teeth from discolored, broken and chipped to beautiful and white. Veneers are used to improve the appearance of the teeth, the shape and size as well. Inserting veneers are not considered as medical dental procedure because they are done to improve the appearance of the teeth.

A discolored teeth has no harm to the teeth, so veneer installation is considered as a cosmetic dental procedure. The entire procedure for getting veneers fixed to your teeth is not a complex one, it involves just tests and minimal preparations.

WHAT ARE VENEERS

Veneers are custom made covering that are bond to the front surface of teeth. They are made of materials that are not harmful to the gums or teeth, this means that they are safe to be worn even for longer periods of time. Veneers are called custom made because they are made to match with the teeth’s size, length and shape. Veneers are bond to the teeth to change the appearance of the teeth, make smiles more beautiful and to shield them from damage. They are also used to restore damaged teeth.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VENEERS

Many people opt for veneers over other dental procedures like:

  • To cover discolored and stained teeth caused by certain foods and drinks, medications, aging).
  • To change the shape and size of the teeth
  • To cover white spots on the enamel that may be caused by too much fluoride
  • To fix broken or chipped teeth.

TYPES OF VENEERS

Veneers are classified according to the type of material used in making it. There are 5 common types of veneers and they are:

1. Porcelain Veneers

This is the most common veneer, it is made of ceramic material which makes it able to withstand stains than most veneers. These type of veneers have the natural color of the teeth and can last for a long time (10 to 15 years). Porcelain veneers can hardly injure the teeth, gums or other soft tissues in the mouth as they are made to be nontoxic.

2. Composite Veneers

These are made composite resin which is a mixture of organic and inorganic materials. Composite veneers have the same bonding materials and color as tooth fillings. However, they do not resist stain like porcelain veneers and do not also last as long as porcelain.

3. Palatal Veneers

Also known as palatal onlays, these veneers are used on some part of the teeth. Typically, onlays are used on the teeth at the back like the molars and premolars but palatal veneers are used to treat the teeth at the front like the canine and incisors. These teeth may be damaged by excessive teeth grinding, deep biting and wearing of the teeth. To restore the damaged teeth, palatal veneers are used on the affected tooth.

4. Lumineers

Lumineers are semi transparent and very thin with about a width of 0.2 mm. Because they are semi transparent, they look exactly like the teeth in shape and color. These veneers are so thin so there is no need for reducing the surface of the teeth or recontouring the teeth before bonding them. One disadvantage of lumineers is that they do not last long like other veneers, they can easily be chipped or broken.

5. Removable Veneers

From their names, they are temporary and can be removed. They do not also need teeth shaping before being used. They can come as instant veneers or custom snap on veneers. The instant veneers can be pressed to the teeth after being placed into hot water for sometime. They cannot be used for long term dental treatment. The custom snap on veneers are also removable but the image of the teeth is need to create the veneers.

VENEERS BEFORE AND AFTER

Before The Procedure

Veneers are used for some dental issues, the dentist will first examine the teeth to know if veneers are the best option for you. You and your dentist will decide on which type of veneer you want and the effect on the teeth. Some factors are considered when making this choice, factors like:

  • Shape of your teeth
  • Color and shade
  • Cost of the veneer
  • How long the material will last
  • The type of material the veneer is made with
  • The length of the procedure
  • The naturalness of the veneer.

After The Procedure

There are steps your dentist will take when fixing veneers, they are:

  • Removing enamel from the front and sides of the teeth to make them ready to receive the veneers. If you are going for lumineers, this step will be skipped.
  • Making an impression of the prepared teeth by your dentist. This is very important to get the right veneer for your teeth.
  • Sending the impression of the teeth to the dental lab for the veneers to be made. Since veneers are custom made to fit your teeth, this step may take weeks. To protect your teeth, the dentist uses a temporary veneer to cover the surface of the teeth till the right veneers are ready.
  • Removing the temporary veneers and bonding the permanent veneers to the teeth. Before attaching the permanent veneers to the teeth, your dentist will clean your teeth.

You are ready to go home after getting the permanent veneers, you are advised to see your dentist when you notice any serious side effects.

PORCELAIN VENEERS BEFORE AND AFTER

There is little preparation for placing porcelain veneers on the teeth. The first step is to select the best shade for the teeth, the next is to prepare the surface of the teeth for the veneers. The dentist will take impressions of the teeth, this will be sent to the lab to make the custom porcelain veneer. Temporary veneer is placed on the teeth to protect the prepared teeth.

The next appointment will be to clean the teeth and fix the veneer. An acidic material will be used to roughen the teeth so that the veneer can easily stick to the teeth. The dentist will also use a special cement to bond the veneer to the teeth, a blue colored light will be used to harden the cement and excess cement is cleaned.

COMPOSITE VENEERS BEFORE AND AFTER

There is a difference in the procedure for fixing porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Composite veneer just needs one appointment for the whole processes to be done as they are bonded directly to the teeth without taking any impression to the dental lab.

The first step for composite veneer is to recontour the teeth, this means to remove small amounts of tooth enamel so as to change the shape, surface and length. After reconstructing the teeth, the composite resins are sculpted on the teeth directly. In cases of the composite chipping away, the chipped area can be repaired.

BAD VENEERS BEFORE AND AFTER

Veneers can go bad, this is not concerned with only the process but also the outcome. The fault is mostly of the dentist who took the impression and produced veneers with it. This may be due to lack of talent, skill, training and artistic ability of the dentist. To repair bad veneers, you will have to see another dentist to replace the veneers. The dentist will have to remove the bad veneers and replace them with the right veneers.

Some of ways veneers can go bad are:

  • Thick bulky porcelain
  • Narrow smile
  • Contact areas too broad
  • Lack surface
  • Uneven edge
  • Bad margin
  • Veneers that are looking too white.
