Tartar otherwise called dental calculus is a calcified plaque, a hard mineral deposits that forms on teeth usually a tough bumpy near the base of the teeth. Most times, it’s also form below the gum line of the teeth . Bacteria mix with proteins and food by-products to form a sticky film called dental plaque. This gunk coats your teeth, gets under your gum line and sticks to fillings or other dental work.

Plaque carries bacteria that can damage tooth  But if plaque are removed regularly , permanent tooth decay and gum disease can be prevented. The condition worsens if  plaque stays on  teeth and hardens into tartar. Tartar which is otherwise called calculus is forms below and above the gum line, usually rough and porous and  can lead to receding gums and gum disease and requires special tools before it is removed by the dentist.

Use a brush with soft bristles that is small enough to fit into your mouth ensuring to use a tartar control toothpaste containing fluoride because fluoride helps to repair enamel damage and also toothpaste containing baking soda   

(2) The use of  electronic, or powered, toothbrushes eliminates  plaque other  than manual models. Note: Be sure it has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval since it has  undergone rigorous quality control and safety tests.

(3) Choose tartar-control toothpaste with fluoride. Fluoride helps to reduce damage because it contains products substance called triclosan that fights the bacteria in plaque.

(4) Dental floss is the only way to remove plaque between  teeth and keep tartar out of sensitive areas.

(5) Rinse daily using an antiseptic mouthwash daily to help kill bacteria that cause plaque.

(6) The bacteria in the mouth thrive on sugary and starchy foods so when they’re exposed to those foods, they release harmful acids . Therefore, eating a healthy diet and limiting the amount of sugary foods helps maintain a healthy teeth so instead of sugary food, it is adviced to go for fruits and vegetables and also brushing and drink plenty of water during and after meals.

(7) Avoid smoking because Studies show that people who smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products are more likely to have tartar.

(8) Use of whitening strips: studies shows that people who used hydrogen peroxide whitening strips with pyrophosphate daily for three months had 29 percent less tartar than those who simply brushed their teeth.     

( 9) Drinking green tea may reduce the amount of bacteria present in the mouth.

(10) Water Flosser: This is a hand-held device that pulses water into the spaces between teeth inorder to remove bacteria and debris. When used regularly and properly, it can be more effective than string floss in reducing plaque. Research found that those who used a water flosser plus manual toothbrush had a 74 percent reduction in whole-mouth plaque compared to 58 percent for those who used a manual toothbrush and string floss.

(11) Mouthwash: According to the ADA, mouthwashes that contain bacteria-fighting ingredients like cetylpyridinium, chlorhexidine, and certain essential oils can fight plaque and tartar.
